Rapper Jamal "Shyne" Barrow, a protege of hip-hop impresario Sean "Puffy" Combs, was hit Tuesday (May 9) with a $6 million civil suit charging assault by a basketball rival. Robert Steinmentz alleges Barrow threw a basketball at his face from five feet away during a game at a New York sports club, and then began punching him.
Steinmetz claims he suffered a broken nose and a cut requiring stitches above one of his eyes as a result of the action. He says Barrow was frustrated because Steinmetz was beating him in a pick-up game. After the incident, Barrow was arrested and charged with assault, possession of a weapon, and harassment. The case is still pending.
Barrow is also facing three counts of attempted murder stemming from a December shooting at a New York nightclub. Combs is facing weapons possession charges from the same incident. Both rappers have pleaded not guilty to the charges in that case.
