What's Up Fatlip?

Down, as in down, but not out, is the direction former Pharcyde member Fatlip details in his off-center clip for What’s Up Fatlip? In the video, Lip, who was always the comedian of the Left Coast quartet that struck gold with the hit single Passing Me By, (1992) keeps the laughs rolling with his demented characters while delivering deeply personal lyrics. Topics range from him dating a white girl to rumors about crack addiction.
Lip appears as a series of pitiful characters in the vid. In one segment, he’s the hip-hop Eddie Cain proclaiming, I still got it, while murdering the hook from his most successful material. The next segment he’s a street clown. Then he’s himself. The music video and song compliment each other detailing the woes of a misunderstood loser who desperately wants to fit in. Truly original.
Don’t be surprised if this one starts an alternative buzz. Spike Jonze, who directed the critically acclaimed indie film, Being Jon Malkovich and Sabotage by the Beastie Boys, captures all the insanity on video. Jonze is an MTV favorite.
Fatlip's debut release, Revenge Of The Nerd, is set for release in mid-2000.
